Hi all;
My name is Roser, this June 2013 I finished my studies in Hotel Management and I am currently living in Mauritius doing an internship in a luxury hotel thanks to Travel Work and to his team, who gave me the opportunity to travel to this paradise island in the Indian Ocean.
During my first month and a half I was in the reception and concierge department. My tasks were those of any hotel receptionist: checking in and out, serving customers, giving them information about activities on the island, answering the phone, making copies of keys... and above all helping Spanish customers in every way possible.
For the past month and a half I'm in the Sales and Marketing department, organising weddings, tour operator visits, updating the hotel's news blog and also looking for new ways to promote the hotel through social media with my colleagues. For the last month and a half I'll be in the Food and Beverage department. I think that going through different departments is a way of getting to know the hotel a lot more.
During my free time I take advantage of the opportunity to visit the surroundings of the island, which are really impressive. I also give lessons to the daughter of a girl from the hotel and I go out with my friends. For example, a couple of weeks ago we went to spend a weekend at the beach and we rented a house together, it was great fun. The truth is that I have not had any problem making friends because the people here are very open, friendly and kind. They immediately open the doors of their house to you (literally speaking). Really seeing how Mauritians live their day to day life and eating typical food (a little spicy at first but it is all a matter of getting used to it) is an experience, because life here is very different from what we are used to.
People here speak three languages, English and French, which they are taught in schools from childhood, and they speak Creole, which is similar to French. Another thing to keep in mind if you ever come here, is not to be put off by the way Mauritians drive, they drive like crazy!
I recommend that anyone who has the opportunity to come here do so because it is really worth it both professionally and personally.
